Mexico Blurb

"Mexico, forgotten by time and commerce, run roughshod over by successive revolutions, languishing in backward politics and economic straits, still breaths that air of possibility. Buildings lie unused, awaiting the restorer's hand. Threatened species survive here. Dreams range, hidden from the global advance of capital that erases culture and difference."

...An excerpt from On Mexican Time by Tony Cohan, which I am currently reading.

The address for PACKAGES!

So, I decided that shipping things to Mexico will most likely be a necessity. I e-mailed the teacher-recruiter and she gave me the school's Guadalajara address. This is where packages can be sent.

The coolest phone thing EVER!

Yay! Here is a really cool way for you to keep in touch with me! AIM came out with a free internet phone that I can use to recieve incoming calls (I can't make calls without paying a monthly fee). So, here is how it works..
-I got a local (Edgewater) phone number. It is (386) 663-9119

- You can call it, and my computer will ring. Once I get the right headset/microphone thing I can answer and we can talk.

-OR, you can leave a voicemail message! I get an e-mail saying you called, and I can go check my voicemail!

You have no idea how exciting it is to get an e-mailed voicemail. And I'm not even away from home yet.
So, test it out whenever! Today! Tomorrow! Remember, the number is (386) 663-9119.
(I sound like an infomercial)

Thanks!

I just want to give a big thanks to all who came to the Fiesta! It was great to see everyone and I hope to keep in touch with everyone over the next few years! I love you all! Next step.... pack everything into my suitcases! WooHoo!

A couple random summer photos to practice uploading pictures:

Here is my amazing friend Rachel and I in the gardens at the Cummer art museum in Jacksonville. I met up with her there for a day of art and shopping~totally fun!

And this is the darling and wonderful Jessica Albright, who will never cease to amaze me. I got the chance to visit her in her home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for a weekend. Too short, but fun!

Yesterday I met one of the girls who will be teaching with me at Lincoln School! Her name is Jillaine, and she is from a town just outside of Pittsburgh (where I am right now). After much phone tag and schedule examination, we met up. She drove to my grandparent's house and then we walked up the street for ice cream and got to know each other a bit. She told me about a free internet phone service, and I told her about the luxury of space bags. She is a very nice girl and it is comforting to know that I will know someone when I arrive.

I'm getting excited.

So, I bought my plane ticket. I leave on August 10th at noon. It's the first one-way ticket I think I've ever bought, and it was more expensive than I expected: about $350.00 . Actually, let us examine some of the costs of my summer:

$112 application fee for Florida Teacher Certification.
$5 for my official transcripts
$23 Fee for a Criminal Background check to send to the school.
$10 for the Apostille I had to request on my Diploma, to get permission to work in Mexico.

And soon I will pay $55 for fingerprinting that goes along with the certification.

Interestingly... I've paid more to get this all set up than I will make for a couple of months down there. Oh well. I am obviously not doing this for the money.
